Endoscopist
Mr. Wal Baraza trained in general surgery in Yorkshire, UK. He completed his subspecialist training in laparoscopic colorectal and pelvic floor surgery in Auckland before taking up a consultant post and honorary clinical lectureship at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. During 7 years in the NHS he developed a particular interest in the management of early rectal cancer, pelvic floor disorders and abdominal wall herniae. In addition to his clinical interests, Wal also has a strong portfolio in education, surgical training and medicolegal practice. He also worked as an advisor to the General Medical Council supporting the regulation of medical associate professionals.
Wal moved to Auckland in April 2023 as a general and colorectal surgeon and senior lecturer at the University of Auckland. He has expertise in the management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal disorders, pelvic floor pathology disorders, hernia surgery and diagnostic gastrointestinal endoscopy. He is a member of the colorectal cancer, pelvic floor and abdominal wall hernia multidisciplinary teams in his public practice as well as the endoscopy users group. He is a member of the ACPGBI, the ESCP, the International Continence Society and is on the UK Register of Expert Witnesses.
